[/li][li] The Black Staff:[/b] Saruman's staff has been held by The White Wizard ever since he became a member of the Istari. This staff is, of course, magical, and it was used to overcome Gandalf at Orthanc. The staff is the source of Saruman's Istari magic, although he has the power of persuasion through his speech. The staff cannot be broken by conventional means, only through Istari magic, and only if Saruman is weakened enough to allow it. If the staff is taken away from Saruman, he will be greatly weakened."Together, my lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle-earth. The old world will burn in the fires of industry. Forests will fall. A new order will rise. We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc."
Full Name: Saruman

Race: Ainur (Maia), Presently in the form of Saruman
Age: Immortal/Unknown; arrived in the year 1000 of the Third Age with the other Maia.
Homeland: Formerly The Undying Lands, presently the Lord of Isengard
Personallity:
Saruman once had a grand personality that pretty much anyone would've found delightful. A millennia ago, he told jokes, made appearances at parties, and had many friends. Though in his time amongst the realm of men, his human body, with all of it's human emotions, have corrupted him with the urges of men. Lust, greed, jealousy, envy. His corruption was complete during his use of the Palantir. As Gandalf had warned, it was unwise to use the Palantir, not knowing who was on the other end. Indeed, Sauron held one of the Palantirs. And although his usage was noble, to find the one ring and to destroy it, Sauron's will alone corrupted Saruman. Saruman pledged his allegiance to Sauron. Now, Saruman is cruel, usually bad-tempered, only cheerful when a devious plot runs its course without interruption, and will not stand for failure.
Appearance:
Saruman appears as an old man, much like the other Istari, he is tall, over six foot, and has grey hair with streaks of black in them. Saruman is commonly called Saruman the White, as he has White robes (indicating that he is indeed, the strongest of the Istari, and chief in rank). Although Saruman had once forsaken his many colored robes, for he said White was weak, and merely a canvas, he re adorned himself in White. For he is the chief Istari, and he wished to stay that way.
History:
Saruman was originally a Maia known as Curumo who served the angelic Valar in the Undying Lands. Curumo was one of the Maia of Aule. Aule was a smith and a master craftsman, it was from him that Curumo learned about the knowledge of machinery and industry from Aule. Sauron was also a Maia under Aule, and learned the same skills. Sauron sought to establish his own dominion in Middle-Earth. It seemed Saruman was destined from the beginning to follow the same path as Sauron, yet the Valar had not foreseen this, and sent Curumo, as Saruman, to lead the Istari to Middle-Earth in order to combat Sauron. For it was believed that Saruman was the strongest of the Istari.
The Istari were master wizards that included: Saruman, Gandalf, Radagast, Alatar, and Pallando. Each wizard was designated by their robes' color: Saruman wore white, as the chief and most powerful of the five, Gandalf wore grey, Radagast wore brown, Alatar and Pallando wore sea-blue (and were referred to as the Blue Wizards). The Istari's mission was to contest the rising power of Sauron in Middle-Earth. Saruman grudgingly brought with him Radagast as a companion from Valinor, at the request of Yavanna, yet still managed to arrive alone, and first. Cirdin the Shipwright, the keeper of the heavens, received Saruman, and only he knows of Saruman's angelic origins.
Saruman did indeed have good intentions when he arrived in Middle-Earth, he wholeheartedly took up the task given to him by the Valar. His first accounts of fighting the growing evil included traveling inward towards the far east to fight evil in the lands of Rhun. The Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando accompanied Saruman in his quest to banish evil from these lands. This quest made it seem as if Saruman was indeed the strongest and wisest of the five. He solidified his position as Chief of the Istari. After many years in Rhun, fighting the evil there and aiding the populace, Saruman returned to Middle-Earth. The Blue Wizards, Alatar and Pallando to stayed in Rhun however, eager to accomplish more in this land. Their Vala lord, Orome, knew most about these far of lands, and Saruman agreed that the Alatar and Pallando would do their best here. What occurred of them after that is unknown.
After one and a half millennia, he returned to the west a different man, just as Sauron's power was growing again in Dol Guldur. Saruman's personality had changed, he was now greedy, lustful, jealous, and corrupted by his human emotions, just as Sauron had been. The White Council was formed at approximately year 2463 of the Third Age in order to counter the growing Evil in Dol Guldor. Galadriel suggested that Gandalf be the one to lead the council, but instead Gandalf submitted the position to Saruman. It was not known at the time that the power in Dol Guldor was indeed Sauron. Sauron was instead referred to as 'The Necromancer'. Whilst the Council agreed the best course of action was to assault Dol Guldor and remove the Necromancer, Saruman refused to allow it, knowing that the Necromancer was indeed Sauron. Saruman wanted Sauron to gain more power, and he wanted the One Ring to reveal itself, so that Saruman could devise a plan to snatch it for himself.
Gandalf, however, thwarted Saruman's plan, and unannounced, he went to Dol Guldor and discovered that the Necromancer was indeed Sauron. Gandalf went back to the White Council with his findings, and Saruman could no longer protest the assault without raising suspicion. The White Council assaulted Dol Guldor, and Sauron, not yet powerful enough to challenge them, fled to his strongholds in Mordor. In this same year, the halfling Smeagol, found the One Ring and disappeared into the Misty Mountains.
After this fiasco, Saruman approached the Steward of Gondor, Beren, and asked permission to use Isengard as his dwelling. Beren, trusting Saruman, gave him Isengard and the Tower of Orthanc, and whatever he could find inside. Saruman knew that the Palantir was in the Tower of Orthanc, and that he could use the Palantir to his advantage, to look for the One Ring. Saruman settled here as the warden of the tower, and representative of the Steward Beren.
Ten years after Sauron abandoned Dol Guldur; he returned to Mordor and declared himself openly. He established contact with Saruman through the Palantír captured from Minas Ithil, now Minas Morgul. In this year, Saruman also took Isengard for himself, and declared himself lord of Isengard, and began to fortify it.
It was at this time that Gandalf found out the location of the One Ring in the Shire, and he went to Isengard to consult Saruman, whom he believed still to be the wisest of the Istari--and good-willed. Gandalf told Saruman that the One Ring was in the Shire, and that a hobbit of the name Frodo Baggins carried it with him currently. Saruman revealed that he already knew this, to Gandalf's surprise. Saruman went on further to say that the nine Ringwraiths were already on their way to kill Frodo, and he had let them pass the river Isen two weeks ago. Upon hearing this Gandalf attempted to flee Orthanc, knowing Frodo to be in danger, but Saruman blocked his way with magic. Saruman, almost with glee, revealed his secret alliance with Sauron and tried to persuade Gandalf to join him.
Gandalf refused, and asked when Saruman the Wise replaced his reason with madness. Saruman responded by attacking Gandalf, the two dueled inside Orthanc. But Saruman was too strong, and he overwhelmed Gandalf. Saruman took Gandalf's staff in hand as well and flung him around like a ragdoll and finally trapped him atop Orthanc without escape. Saruman continued to torture Gandalf until one day--during torture, and thanks to the unknown efforts of Radagast, one of Middle-Earth's giant eagles came to Gandalf's rescue.
"So you have chosen death..." Saruman whispered to himself as Gandalf flew away.
Upon returning to his Palantir he asked Sauron what he would have him do. Sauron replied, build an army worthy, and large enough to crush the dominion of man. A goblin approached Saruman and asked what was to be done, and Saruman replied, "We have work to do."
