The beast was too powerful even for all 9 men, whilst they were doing damage they were risking their own lives and all 9 were essential to the mission. They followed boromir's advice and retreated into the mine, the ranger just about made it, the beast tried to attack but instead destroyed the entrance.
Rocks fell from the mine as it began to shake from the impact, Boromir pulled his shield above his head and grabbed Pippin to protect him from the debris that fell. They managed to come out unharmed but what of the others? The Ranger had just rolled of frodo.
"Are you guys alright? Looks like we're going to head through this death trap." He paused for a moment, he could barely see forward and his torch had gone out. "We need light, gandalf, you'll have to lead the way."

carry me away I NEED YOUR STRENGTH DARE TO BELIEVE over one last time and then i'll let
His dexterity saved him as Legolas shifted his pained body to roll under the hail of stone and rubble, entering last save Bill the pony, who was clearly doomed to serve as the guardian's meager meal. The door slammed shut and down and on the mouth of the mines at once, bashed in as the creature sealed the entire Fellowship inside, thus eliminating the choice to choose their route.
He let out a quick breath, unable to see even his own icy exhaling in the cold darkness of the mountain's roots. He could still hear the ferocious rampaging of the beast from outside, as the ancient Holly was uprooted and hurled in rage against the crumbled slabs of the entrance, forever imprisoning them.
The Elf's sharp eyes dotted to and fro, in a frantic search for his retreated comrades. Had the ringbearer and his guardian's made it all to safety? He felt exhausted from the short but devastating battle, defeat bearing down on him with a heavy hand as a sign of failure for the party's first engagement. Picking himself up in the darkness, he found his vision adjusting ever so slightly to the dim of the hall, but he possessed no luminescent sight.
"I guess we're out of options," he cried in response to the familiar voices of Aragorn and Boromir.
Oh, how he longed for another mouthful of Gandalf's supply of miruvor! But they were certainly running low on the liquid provision, and saving up was the only wise decision. Grabbing his fallen bow, yet refusing to let down his guard in the dark, he waited for Gandalf's staff to create the light for the path.
The fall of rubble had ceased, and silence reigned for a brief moment, during which Legolas' senses picked up the distant sound of a pitter-patter. But only for a second, and he shrugged it off as an echo of a Hobbit's light toes.

Gandalf was the last of the 9 into the mines, and the last to narrowly escape the falling of the rocks, which reduced their number of options to one. They would have to brave the mines.
"Well, isn't this strange... very well. We must brave the mines."
The light from his staff was present once again. He brought himself towards the front of the group, signalling that they should continue on through the mines. He would pack a fat one once they were out of here.

3.......2........1.......ACTION “Down here......" They had successfully escaped the Watcher. Despite all of their strength and their bravery and valor, the beast was dangerous and now.....there was no turning back. He scanned the area with a beady eyes, then to each of the members of the Fellowship, making sure they were all alright. When all seemed fine, he put one of his axes onto his back, then with his free arm waved it forward, "Well? What are we waiting for?! Off to Moria!", as he began to walk towards the mines, "Drinks are on me once we meet up with Cousin Balin. Haha", as he headed forwards calmly but at the same time, keeping his guard...just incase....
